2024 Advanced Air Academy Recipients

 

Ella Lucas

Ella Lucas is a 17-year-old from California. Her career goal is to become a commercial airline pilot and be certified in aviation maintenance. Ella is part of her local EAA Civil Air Patrol, has completed ground school and with 20 hours of flight time is working on soloing through Glendale Community College’s Aviation Program. She likes to handglide and volunteers as a youth soccer coach in her spare time. Ella has her own website, flygirl.la and loves to write about aviation. She is looking forward to attending the EAA Advanced Air Academy Camp in Oshkosh, WI this summer for the hands-on learning environment and networking opportunities.

 

Lucas Garcia

Lucas Garcia is a 17-year-old from New Mexico, currently residing in Germany. He is currently working towards his private pilot’s license and his career goal is to join the USAF as a pilot. He was previously attended the highly sought after Aim High Flight Academy where he accumulated 15 hours of physical, 15 hours of FAA-approved Sim flying and 20 hours of ground school. Lucas is excited to attend the EAA Advanced Air Academy Camp in Oshkosh, WI this summer for the hands-on learning experience and to be immersed in all things aviation to improve his skills and grow his knowledge of the complexities of flight.

2023 Advanced Air Academy Recipients

Eve Tonyan

Eve Tonyan is a 15-year-old from Illinois. In 2021, she took a flight on a private plane and fell in love with aviation. She is currently a sophomore in high school where she is a part of a competitive rowing team, and is focused on academic excellence. Eve plans on starting flight school in college and wants to become a commercial pilot. She is excited to attend the EAA Advanced Air Academy Camp as it will be an excellent opportunity to explore all of the options that a career in aviation has to offer.

 

Luca Flores

Luca FloreS is a 17-year-old from California. He has earned his private pilot’s license and logged 90+ hours of flight time so far. He spends his free time attending airshows, jump seating flights, visiting control towers and engages with other students to mentor and navigate the challenges of aviation. His dream is to become a commercial pilot and attending the EAA Advanced Air Academy is an ideal place to learn how to advance his goals and network with the aviation community.

2022 Advanced Air Academy Recipients

Sydney Lavoi

One of the recipients of the 2022 Cajun’s Aviation Dream Scholarship Awards is Sydney Lavoi. She is a 16-year-old from Louisiana. 

Sydney is passionate about aviation and has gotten experience with multiple aircraft (Cessna 152, 172 & 182, Piper Archers and Cirrus SR22) since she began her pilot training. She has studied hard and also learned the preventative maintenance of these airplanes. Sydney completed her first solo flight by her 16th birthday and has a goal of obtaining her private pilot’s license by her 17th birthday. 

Sydney plans on becoming a cargo pilot or owing her own private charter business in the future. She is extremely excited to attend the Advanced Air Academy Camp as it will be an excellent opportunity to explore all of the options that a career in Aviation has to offer. 

 

Trevor Bolena

One of the recipients of the 2022 Cajun’s Aviation Dream Scholarship Awards is Trevor Bolena. He is an 18-year-old from Arkansas. 

Trevor got his start in aviation by joining his high school’s aviation club. He is also in JROTC and was selected as the Executive Officer (#2 ranking cadet). Trevor has completed Embrey Riddles online basic flight coarse, earned a Discovery flight which led him to an opportunity to build airplanes at Game Composites, a company producing the only U.S. manufactured aerobatic aircraft. He has done a variety of jobs including polishing airplanes and building fuselages while also competing and serving as the Captain of his Lacrosse & Mountain Bike teams. Trevor has also been nationally recognized for his community service and volunteer work. He is excited to attend the Advanced Air Academy Camp to learn as much as he can about aviation. Trevor’s goal is to become a military aviator and is working towards being selected for a pilot slot in the AFROTC.

2020/2021 Advanced Air Academy Scholarship REcipients

EDWARD CAMERON

One of the recipients of the 2020 Cajun’s Aviation Dream Scholarship Awards is Edward Cameron. He will be 16 years old and is from California. 

Edward was exposed to aviation as a child but discovered the thrill of flying at 14 years old in a Diamond DA20 through the EAA Chapter 96 Young Eagles program. They also provided a voucher for his first flight lesson, which he took out of Torrance Airport (KTOA) with Pacific Skies Aviation in a Cessna 172. He is currently working on obtaining his private pilot’s license and has completed the Sporty’s FAA certified Learn to Fly course. 

Edward is a machinist for the FIRST Robotics Competition team (Team 330 The Beach Bots) where he has learned many mechanical and operational skills which have also assisted him in understanding aircraft and developing his flying skills. He is currently in the Police Explorer Program and after high school plans on pursuing a degree in psychology and criminal justice. Edward is extremely excited to attend the EAA Advanced Air academy and will use this opportunity to learn more about the unique world of flight to help him with his goals in becoming a military and/or police aviator and private pilot!

Valentina Juarez

One of the recipients of the 2020 Cajun’s Aviation Dream Scholarship Awards is Valentina Juarez. She is 16 years old and is from California.  Valentina’s interest in aviation started when her cousin introduced her to the EAA Young Eagles program. This program has taught her so much about planes and the fundamentals of flying one. She loves working with the complex variables and coding which impacts a plane’s ability to takeoff or stay on the ground.   She also enjoys reading and researching aviation related topics and was particularly fascinated with the issues surrounding the Boeing 737. Valentina is excited to attend the Air Academy Camp to expand her knowledge and network with individuals that can help her pursue her dream of being a computer engineer with a focus in aviation. This camp will be an excellent opportunity for her to work with others and exchange ideas regarding problem solving under pressure, which is crucial in the aviation world.

Joaquin O’Keefe

One of the recipients of the 2019 Cajun’s Aviation Dream Scholarship Awards is Joaquin O’Keefe. He is 17 years old and is from California. 

Joaquin discovered the EAA Young Eagles program when he was 16 and took his first ride out of Compton, CA in a Diamond DA20. This flight inspired him to pursue his own pilot’s license. He has done so through the Sporty’s online ground school and used a voucher from the EAA for a free instructed flight lesson in a Cessna 172 at a flight school in Torrance. He is currently a third of the way through obtaining his license in a Cessna 152. In 2018 he also became a member of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program. He is interested in becoming an A&P mechanic in addition to being a pilot. He is very excited to attend the EAA Advanced Air Academy Camp and will use the experience to network and help him decide to pursue flying helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and/or possibly joining the military.

Makaio Anderson

One of the recipients of the 2019 Cajun’s Aviation Dream Scholarship Awards is Makaio Anderson. He is 16 years old and is from Florida. 

Makaio did a discovery flight with the Young Eagles program when he was eight years old. The pilot let him fly the plane and he has been in love with everything about airplanes since then. He has attended four meetings of the EAA Ultralight Chapter 149 South Lakeland X49ers at the South Lakeland Airport where he was able to help rivet a wing for a bi-plane, do pre-flight walk arounds and safety checks. Makaio was awarded the James C. Ray scholarship when he was 15 years old for a Glider Solo where he completed his training at Seminole Lake Gliderport and soloed on October 21, 2017. He has since logged 81 hours in a glider, volunteers his time at the Gliderport in exchange for flight hours, and currently attends ground school at Central Florida Aerospace Academy. Makaio wants to become an instructor to teach kids how to fly gliders and his ultimate career goal is to become a private, commercial or military pilot. He is very excited to attend the EAA Advanced Air Academy Camp and will use the experience to gain as much knowledge about the future of aviation and how he can be a part of it.
